Fall Fest: Pears

by Madeline Shores

Move over, apples.  With their sumptuous curves and juicy goodness, there’s no denying pears are one of the most seductive fruits.  Bite into one and its crisp skin and tender flesh just might take your senses for a  roller coaster ride. Or take your own journey and make something new with pears. We dare you.

Each Wednesday for the rest of the fall, a group of blogging friends including those above will swap our recipes and tips about the following harvest-fresh ingredients. Here’s the schedule:

10/20 Pears
10/27 “Mad Stash”, aka what you’re canning, preserving, freezing for winter
11/3 Root Vegetables
11/10 Brassicas

We each post something and then link to one another, so that you can travel around the combined effort, gathering the goodies. Sharing makes the experience even better, so if you have a recipe or tip that fits any of our weekly themes, you can do either of the following:

  • Leave a comment on participating blogs with a link to your recipe/tip
  • Publish a post of your own, and grab the juicy Fall Fest 2010 badge (illustrated by Matt Armendariz of Mattbites)

We hope to see you in the kitchen!

As a tea enthusiast, I was inspired to craft a sweet pear dish that infused the complex flavors and aromas of green tea with lemongrass/ginger. Here’s my Fall Fest recipe for Poached Bosc Pear with Green Tea & Lemongrass/Ginger/Lavender Honey Simple Syrup http://bit.ly/9r2ht2

Never thought to include pears in risotto before – interesting idea!
I made a pear tarte tatin for fall fest: http://4seasonsoffood.blogspot.com/2010/10/pear-tarte-tatin.html

I’m with Ranjani, that combo is totally new to me but i bet it’s delicious

I haven’t had poached pears in ages…but I do have a few leftover Boscs sitting in my fruit basket, so perhaps it’s time to revisit that.

My contribution to fall fest, which I’m loving BTW: One-Pot Lamb with Sweet Pears and Leeks

Another favorite is Roasted Beets with Pears and Feta

I made a great panna cotta recipe with poached pears. Its really easy to make and soooo beautiful. I didn’t explain the how to poach the pears in the post but basically all you have to do is boil them in water until they are tender with some sugar and a vanilla bean pod (scraped). http://thehorttshearawho.blogspot.com/2010/10/panna-cotta-with-honey-and-poached.html

Risotto with pears? I will have to try that. Never thought of pairing those before.
This is the first time I have joined in on Fall Fest.
I made a Pear, Honey and Ginger Slab Pie which turned out so yummy! Here is a link to the post.

Pears in risotto — what a good idea!

My contribution to Fall Fest this week is pear ginger jam — lovely on toast for breakfast, but equally lovely with sharp cheese and crackers before dinner.

Great idea, I must try that and must make “pears belle helene” soon. I made two delicious soups with pears for #fallfest this week. http://dejavucook.wordpress.com/2010/10/20/celery…. http://dejavucook.wordpress.com/2010/10/20/cream-
