18 Aug Newsflash: Summer on Last Legs
We are beginning to experience cool mornings and chilly evenings here in New York, a reminder that Autumn is on its way. I’m literally counting the days, as for me, there is no sweeter time of year. But I’ll save that thought for another day.
In preparation for the cooking frenzy that will begin with the crisp weather, I’m reading a book called Spice: The History of a Temptation, which we’ll review in an upcoming issue. The book offers an intriguing look at how spices have been interpreted as otherworldly, aphrodisiacal, and a source of many cravings. Food history is mind candy for me.
In fact, I’m starting to wonder at what point my bookshelves will collapse, as I’ve now covered salt, science, bread, food politics, and countless other subjects. Gastronomy brings out the eternal student within me, and I find myself quite out of sorts if there are not at least two books next to my bed at all times. Movers hate me. 🙂 We’ll be reviewing books more frequently now that we have more bodies in place, but remember that you can participate, too, either with reviews or a food perspective of your own.
