Musings of a Former City Slicker

Having grown up in New York’s Hudson Valley, I took for granted some of the farmland in the area — as a teenager all I wanted to do was get away. As a twenty-something, Manhattan’s sidewalks summoned me like a siren, demanding exploration from my curious spirit. Now that I have returned here (to my “roots”) to start this magazine, I find a unique kind of solace in the greenery and farmstands I see. Though much of the area has been suburbanized, with a 30-minute drive I can still find cows and crops. I still need a city fix on occasion, but suddenly there is a whole new world open to discovery. The next couple of weeks I’ll be exploring some of the farms in the area, learning more about this jewel of land some have taken to calling the “Napa of the East Coast.” Though our wines have a way to go yet, there is certainly much agriculture to be celebrated. In order for me to fully explore the world of gastronomy, my hands need to caress the earth, and understand more about the farm side of “farm to table.” Stay tuned.
