20 Mar Food and Philosophy
I’ve been asked to contribute an essay to an upcoming anthology on food and philosophy, so it is time, at long last, to seal my fate as an official food geek by launching a self-directed study of philosophy on a much deeper level.
In just an initial skim, I see interesting fodder from philosophers like Aristotle and Epicurus, who discuss the senses at length, and I’m eager to dive in. The research itself is more for my own knowledge than for the essay itself, as I seek clarity on a number of issues with regard to the mind and body. There will undoubtedly be some physiological inquiry as well, so I can better understand the tastebuds, bodily reactions (what makes one swoon?), etc.
I’ve had my fill of those shilling “sensuality” like cheap porn (aphrodisiacs seem to be as deep as the current “sensualists” go), so it is time to head them off at the pass with proper intellectual discourse. There is so much substance missing in what I currently see in the media that I can tolerate it no longer; there is a place for intelligence in all of this, and it doesn’t have to be dull, pretentious or pedantic. At least not on my watch.
