Unearned Burdens

Unearned Burdens

Have you ever noticed that some people carry around the “human condition” as a source of guilt? “The poor animals, all we do is kill and eat them.” “The poor trees, all we do is tear them down to make paper.”

How about the poor humans who are constantly subject to moralizing from those on their perceived lofty ground, eschewing earthly pleasures (or human necessities, even) so they can feel comfortable when their heads hit the pillow at night?

Why is it so difficult for some to accept that human beings are the top of the food chain? It is a simple fact of reality. It doesn’t necessitate that we are evil, worthy of guilt, or determined to run rampant, destroying all that is good; it simply is. What we choose to do with our lives, and the world around us, given that position, is based on our moral standards. That some miss that important point, and assign the evil equally, is a poignant reflection of their own inner state.
